Tethering is possible on the Palm Pre but we don’t know if Sprint will be allowing us to use tethering on the Palm Pre or not. The Sprint website did advertise tethering on the Palm Pre via Bluetooth/USB on their website but they removed it later. Today Sprint Chief Service Officer Bob Johnson said that tethering will be available through Sprint, and unlike Verizon or AT&T it will allow customers to connect the Palm Pre to their laptops in order to surf the Web over Sprint’s 3G network. Engadget was told the opposite, so we don’t know whether or not this is true.  Bookmark this page/subscribe to the RSS feeds to get updates on when/if tethering will be available.

Not currently available – at least on my plan. Appears to support it but it’s not enabled:

Sprint is not capable voice while using the data connection… thus speaking while tethered is not possible.

This drawback makes it unlikely that Sprint could sell data tethering as a service on the Pre.

Solution: just give it away gratis. Nobody can complain about a service that they get free. Sprint would be able to claim that they give away free tethering on the Pre and this would be a highly popular move among early adopters. How much data is this really going to be? Not that much. Come on Sprint…. this could be a big win for you and your customers. People have been doing this on their Treos for years.

how do you hook up tethering? software needed? please help

    • nate dawg says:

I agree with Walt. The new Iphone came out and you can see that all of the groupies are hacked because they may not get tethering from ATT. This is Sprint’s chance to actually please its customers and maybe even make some iphonatics a little envious by doing what they said they would do and provide free tethering. Hope someone is listening.

I agree .. if Sprint allows tethering with the Pre as it does with the Black berry.. this will blow a lot of minds.. I have 3 phones The HTC Touch, Blackberry and now the Pre. I removed the Blackberry to activate the Pre, but I feel naked without it , because I am so used to tethering when I am out and about……

    • bryan says:

actually when I had my htc sprint touch I would tether and be able to text, but not talk, for some reason I though I was able to talk, but I remember now it was just texting, also I could be on the net on the tethered laptop and the sprint touch, well bye

  3. Phil says:

Frustrating. Tethering is maybe the biggest reason I bought the Pre (and not the current iPhone).
Strange how little info is available about this on the web..

Here is what Sprint said about tethering with the Pre:

Thank you for contacting Sprint about using Palm Pre as a modem.

Unfortunately, Palm pre does not support phone as a modem. The Sprint
      30-Day Risk-Free Guarantee allows you to return a like-new phone to a
Sprint store or by mail. Phones purchased at other retailers, such as
Radio Shack, can be returned to that store. Please call Order Support
team to return the handset. You can call them at (866) 789-8292.
Alternatively, please visit the nearest Sprint-owned Retail store to
      return the handset.

I switched from Sprint to ATT/iPhone when Sprint removed tethering from my account (without notifying me or changing how much they charged me!). My notion was that if I was going to be forced to use a mobile browser by the evil oligopolists who run U.S. cell phone networks, I would at least get one with the iPhone that didn’t suck (unlike all the browsers on Sprint phones at the time, which sucked big-time).

Way to go getting me back, Sprint. Uhm, yeah right, I don’t *think* so. No tethering? Sorry, I stick with my iPhone, Sprint!

  5. Phil says:

If you’ve ever used a phone to connect your laptop to the internet (tethering) you know what an indispensable feature it can be, especially if it is at no extra charge. Sprint has gotten smart. They know people will PAY (extra) for this feature, which was once given away for “free”. Especially now that 3G data networks almost rival aircards (can anyone say $70/mo?) in speed. I hope they are just being cautious about overloading data servers at the launch of the Pre and not scheming about ways to make money off tethering.

  6. CMonticalvo says:

I’ve been a palm user since early 90′s. three reason that I am switching from Palm: no external card, all my prevoiusly purchased apps are worthless & no tethering. c’mon Palm pre! You mean your marketing people didn’t think about these advantage that could separate it from the iPhone?

    • prefanatic says:

The pre does support all the other previous apps. There is an app you download in the app store called classics.

      • Marilyn Dennison says:

I cannot find “Classics” in the Pre app store. Is it located somewhere else and how can I download it?

  7. Palm...never again says:

Yeah that program sucks just as much as this phone!!! 90% of the apps won’t work right and they have the audacity to charge $30! Oh well thank goodness for 30-day exchanges cause I’m going back to my Touch Pro soon as the store opens tomorrow!!!

  8. jcypher says:

Until AT&T or Verizon gets their act together and offers a decent tethering phone, like the Palm Pre or the Apple iPhone could be, I am sticking with my old Palm 700p on Verizon, which *does* support tethering, and has worked fine that way for a couple of years now. I would gladly switch to a newer snazzier phone if I didn’t have to take a leap backwards, by losing tethering!

  9. Arbie says:

I came very close to trading in my wife’s Treo 700 for the new Pre. She uses PAM tethering when she travels. I would extend my contract for the two years and ante up the $200.00 for a Pre if the tethering was enabled. Without it I just don’t need a new phone that badly. Like jcypher I feel like I would be taking a leap backwards with the upgrade.

Palm is relying on us “first adopters” to save them from the iphone and now Sprint makes the best reason to switch unusable. Palm should be our biggest advocate on this. Where are they?

  10. @Meignelson says:

Its funny this topic is being brought up. I called Sprint in regards to using my Pre as a modem and the agent said it does not have capabilities right now and I would have to have the Everything Messaging Plan NOT the Everything Data Plan you are required to get as a Pre owner on he family plan. How would I use my Palm 755 as a modem?

  11. Saiks says:

Download pdaNet… for the Treo 755

  12. fernando says:

I have WM phone. i’ll wait to try palm pre. i’ve tethered my 2 year old phone a few times and i’m glad it was there when I needed it. I just click on the internet share icon.

  13. Keith says:

For Treo’s the easiest way to tether is with the program from June Fabric called PDAnet: http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/index.php

As for tethering on the Pre – it is possible but you have to apply a hack: http://forums.precentral.net/hardware-use-trouble-shooting/186071-pre-roam-only-hack-5.html

  14. Barry says:

I am totally disgusted with the Pre. The shutting down is awful, the lack of apps makes this less than I had on my 755p, no tethering, can’t view a pdf from a web page, java on a website doesn’t work, and no flash – I’ve given this think 27 days and I’m about to bring it back!
Sprint sucks and Palm sucks for putting this thing out before it was ready. After more than a month there are still no new apps. Oh and I almost forgot, you can’t record video! C’mon, this is a basic function which should be on a phone like this.

  15. Tyson says:

No tethering sucks!! This is another sprint bad…. I would pay forit if it were available, but they’re (sprint) not capitalizing on the service. The Pre is better than my motorolla q and better than my GF’s Htc… I just which they would make this phone live up to it’s hype.

  16. Mike says:

I have enabled tethering on my Pre. You just have to do a little searching on homebrew apps for the palm pre. In my case I can set my phone up as a WIFI hotspot and my laptop connects to it. The speed has been really decent!

    • malebisse says:

Can you give me some direction as to where you found that hack? I would love to be able to use my Pre as a hotspot as well.

  17. Mike says:

The Pre tethers easily. Bluetooth connect your pre to your laptop and under “Network Connections” double click the “Bluetooth Network Connection” – Your Pre should come up as an Access Point. Click “Connect” and enjoy!

Also, You can leave your Pre plugged into the computer as “Just Charging” and still have the bluetooth connection.
